Patriots vs. Houston

What it means for the 2019 NFL Playoffs

Sunday Night Football took a turn that not many people were anticipating. The New England Patriots lost their No. 1 ranking in the AFC. Well, at least for now.

The Patriots faced off against the Houston Texans, with the Texans taking the win with a 6 point lead of 28 to 22. The Patriots struggled through the entirety of the game. Offense struggled as it has through the season, losing key players like Gronkowski from last year. With Gronk gone, Edelman has been getting a lot of attention. However, on Sunday, he didn’t really get his hands on the ball until the second half of the game, while James White caught 2 of the 3 touchdowns Brady threw.

They’re defense was strong. It has been all season, with the defense scoring a lot of the points for the Patriots. But on Sunday, they didn’t catch any interceptions or fumbles, so it was up to the offense to deliver.

Granted, the Patriots only lost by 6 points, but they scored most of their points in the 4th quarter, and it seemed as though the Texans were confident that they were going to win, that they begun to sort of relax slightly on defense allowing the ‘Pats’ to score.

With the Patriot’s loss, the Baltimore Ravens clinched the number one seed for the AFC. The ‘Pats’ and Ravens each have the same amount of wins and losses, but the Ravens out-beat the Patriots (37-20) on November 3rd bypassing them in the ranking.

For now, the Patriots have lost home field advantage for the playoff games. They still have games against the Chiefs, Bengals, Bills, and Dolphins. The No. 1 seed is still up in the air, but if the ‘Pats’ lose to the Chiefs, things could take a turn for the worst. Depending upon the outcome of the next few games, they could end up anywhere from the No. 2 to No. 5 seed and possible wild card: A huge change for a team that has dominated the playoffs as the leading team for years.

However, it is all still up in the air. There is still chance for them to come out on top, and if anyone knows the Patriots, it isn’t uncommon to see them weave their way to a win at the end of it all.
